Installation & Updates
How to Install
- Open the Google Play Store, App Store, or the official WhatsApp website on your device.
- Search for 'WhatsApp Messenger' or tap the official download link.
- Tap Install (Android/iOS) or download the APK file from whatsapp.com/android if you are sideloading.
- If installing an APK, enable 'Install from unknown sources' for your browser in your phone's security settings.
- Open the app and accept the Terms of Service.
- Enter your phone number and verify it with the 6-digit SMS code.
- Allow contacts, notifications, and storage permissions when prompted.
- Set up your profile name and photo, then start chatting.
How to Update
- Open Google Play Store (Android) or App Store (iOS) on your device.
- Tap your profile icon and go to 'Manage apps & device' or 'Updates'.
- Find WhatsApp Messenger in the list of pending updates.
- Tap 'Update' next to WhatsApp, or tap 'Update all' to refresh every app.
- For APK users, download the latest version from whatsapp.com/android and install over your existing app — your chats stay intact.
- On Windows or Mac, the desktop app updates automatically; you can also reinstall from whatsapp.com/download.
How to Use
After installing WhatsApp, verify your phone number to access your chats. Tap the chat icon to start a new conversation, choose a contact, and begin typing. Use the paperclip icon to send photos, documents, location, or contacts. To make a call, open any chat and tap the phone or video icon. Create a group by selecting 'New Group' from the menu, add participants, and name your group. Share updates with 'Status' (tap the Updates tab), which disappear after 24 hours. To link WhatsApp on a computer, open Settings > Linked Devices > Link a Device, then scan the QR code at web.whatsapp.com. Enable two-step verification under Settings > Account > Two-step verification for extra security.
